The yule tide may have come to an end but the winter magic is not over. These images are from a Norwegian photographer named Per Breiehagen. He is based in Minnesota, and the little elf girl in the images are of his daughter. The sweater and dress are classic Norwegian folk clothing, but her shoes come from the Sami people of the Arctic circle where the reindeer graze in winter. There is something special about the winter time, and of course for Dale of Norway it is the best time of year! We hope for long snowy winters to come. You can purchase these images to frame from his website: http://www.perbreiehagen.com/

This illustration is from Brita Ellström’s collection of yule tide works. She was a Swedish artist active from 1905 until 1945 as a children’s book illustrator. This boy here is wearing a Haukeli Sweater and Setesdal Valley patterned socks, which we offer on our online website in several different colors (baby blue, navy blue, red, black, etc) see below :

Wrist Warmers

Wrist warmers are a good way to start if you are new to knitting. They don’t take as much time because they usually are only 4 inches long serving as cuffs in the wintertime. These are more involved as they have knitted wool on the edge, but the beading is something manageable for a beginner! Wrist warmers are very traditional examples of Scandinavian knitting, but can also be found in the traditional clothing of the Sami and the Inuit tribes.

This image is from Sweden’s Svensksljöd boutique, a wonderful organization that sells Nordic crafts from a myriad of artisans.

This is a Czech picture book I love by Zdenek Miler, and it makes winter look like a fairy tale!

For everyone who was disappointed with last years snow fall there is hope! This year will be snowier and colder than usual. Almanacs are a great way to look at seasonal weather forecasts, and this winter season will expect heavy snow showers especially around the Yule Tide. That means a great ski and snowboard season and a perfect gift idea. For all the figure skaters out there, a Dale of Norway sweater fits no better occasion than chilly snowy wintery day on an outdoor skating rink.Image
